The "Just 4 Fourthies" End of Year Party

Friday, May 31st,  will include: 

Swimming at the St. Catherine's Pool from 10:30-11:30, a pizza lunch in the Lower School Assembly Room, watching a movie with snacks, and a sweet treat before the end of the day. Make sure your swim bag is packed with everything you need.

Splish! Splash! 

 If your daughter chooses not to wear her suit under her clothes, there will be time to change before going to the pool. Each girl needs to have a towel, goggles, a swim cap, hairbrush and undergarments, into which she can change. Swim caps are required.There will be certified life guards on duty and parent chaperones.

Language Arts:

The girls are finishing presentations on their personalized learning. This year we have learned incredible facts about cheese, polar bears, doughnuts, arctic foxes, roller coasters, butterflies, and much, much more. 

Mathematics:

The girls will be working with area and perimeter to create a unique home or garden space using graph paper and noting the area and perimeter of the spaces used on their drawings. Inspiration and attention to detail is a must!

When all have completed the End of Year math test, we will review it together and the results will be sent home in student folders.

History 4 Fourthies:

Students learned about Anne Frank and took a look at the secret annex she lived in with her family. We will be taking a look at some of the major historical moments of the 1950s through the 2000s this week.

Literature:

There are so many exciting events occuring in our class novel, Letters from Rifka. The girls are on the edge of their seats to find out if the main character, Rifka, will finally be able to join her family after being detained on

Ellis Island! Let's hope it all works out for the best!

History 4 Fourthies:
Students in 4-C had a great Living History experience today. The immigrant families braved storms,
close quarters, and seasickness on the steamship "St. Catherine," with their faithful Captain Cavallo, in order to get to their destination, the United States. Cheers rang out from the crowd as the ship came upon Lady Liberty. From all walks of life, and a variety of countries, these girls shared foods from their land of origin, storries from their journals and received certificates and were welcomed as new citizens of the United States of America!

Mathematics:
Students will begin reviewing the math concepts
 they have learned this year and will be reviewing
 this week and next. The girls will be taking an 
End of Year Test on Wednesday, May 29th.

Language Arts: Many of the girls have completed their Immigration Journals and will be working on a fantasy story based on the book, There's an Elephant in the Bathtub. It is a fictional tale of a little boy who can see and hear animals. The only problem is the adults in the story can neither see nor hear the animals, so the little boy is not believed, until the animals save the adults from a disaster.  



Literature:
We are in the middle of Rifka's adventure, as she tries to keep her family together and travel to the United States so that they can become citizens. The family has ups and downs, have had illness and have recovered and are once again on their way to America.

Classroom Art:
Students will be working on a project using their first name and symmetry to create the design with bright crayons and watercolor.

Living History Immigration Day:  This Friday May 17th

Language Arts:
This Wednesday is our last Author's Visit of the Year. Students will hear about the art of writing books by beloved author Jessica Day George. Tuesdays at the Castle has been a
popular "read". She will be sharing her new series with us as well.  4-C  will be previewing and purchasing books at the Lower School Book Fair on Wednesday, May 15th from 2:30-2:50 p.m. Please send in a check or cash with your daughter, if you would like her to purchase books, or better yet, join us at the Book Fair! There will be books available from the Summer Reading List.

Literature:

The girls have already read three chapters in their new class novel, Letters from Rifka. It is a riveting story of a family's  escape from Russia. The family struggles with being separated, hiding from the authorities and then at long
 last, being reunited at Ellis Island.

History 4 Fourthies
We will be having a "Living History" experience this Friday. Students will create their own costumes from items found at home, and bring a basket with a snack. This could be fresh fruit, cheese, crackers, or cookies, for example.The girls will board the classroom ship, The SS Cavallo and the fictional journey to Ellis Island will then begin. Please make sure your daughter  brings a change of clothes to school. The girls will be changing before they go to lunch.

Mathematics: 


We will be making and measuring more angles in our journals. Students are becoming adept at measuring with a protractor. More opportunities to multiply and divide with whole numbers and decimals will become part of our daily routine this week. The girls are also learning to multiply three digit numbers which seems difficult at first, but as students work through the process they realize that it is just one more similar step to take in order to find the answer.

Wednesday, May 8th Fourthies will be going over to the Middle School to learn more about theFifth Gradel. It will be a morning filled with fun and adventure across the green...

Literature:

We finished our novel, A Year Down Yonder.. The girls will have a test on this historical fiction novel on Thursday. We will begin Letters from Rifka, an immigration novel, tomorrow. The girls will enjoy this novel as they write their own historical fiction journal entries for the next two weeks.

Don't forget to upload a family picture/mother/daughter or father/daughter picture to your daughter's googledrive so that the she can create a Movie Poster that we will put up and share on the bulletin board outside the classroom.You may email the picture directly to me if that is easier.

Mathematics
Students have taken their Unit 7 Test and will be reviewing the answers. It will be sent home Thursday with the girls, along with graded papers and Conference notes.

History 4 Fourthies:

The girls have begun their fictional journal entries for the Immigration Unit and are busy plotting their adventures through different countries, along the way to America. They are showing creativity and good planning as they write their entries. Again, the date for Living History Immigration Day has been rescheduled to Friday, May 17th. This was to accommodate the Strings and Choir Girls going to Busch Gardens this Friday.  

Big/Little Sisters Picnic Lunch  
Fourthies and their 8th Grade Big Sisters will join together Thursday for a Picnic Lunch.This is provided by the Dining Hall for girls who buy lunch. Please bring your lunch if you usually pack your own. This will be our last get-together. We have had fun and learned a lot from our Big Sisters at St. Catherine's this year!

How To Videos for Parents

Students welcomed Grandparents and Special Friends last Thursday with a flair. They followed directions on google classroom and created fantastic Haiku Summer Poetry which was read chorally with their partners. We lunched on the patio and shared stories and laughter. It was truly a special day for all.

Saturday was equally as exciting with the Daisy Days Celebration of the Maypole. The girls enjoyed being together and dancing the Maypole in their flowing pastel skirts. It was especially exciting to see how well the girls braided their Maypole ribbons. Exquisite!


Please have your daughter upload a family picture or a Mother/Daughter or Father/Daughter photo to her google drive for our next digital project. We would like to begin this on Monday, May 6th. 


Mathematics

The girls will continue in Unit 7 adding, subtracting decimals, and will learn to multiply decimals by whole numbers. They will also be learning Geometry: identifying points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. The girls will learn to measure angles using a protractor.

History 4 Fourthies/Language Arts

4-C will be sharing Country Research and writing historical/fiction entries in Immigration Journals. (The Living History Immigration Day will be postponed to some time later in May when there are fewer outside activities.)Girls may bring old journals from home to use, the outside will be collaged with vintage pictures if they have a modern look, we will cover pages that have been used with maps, steamship tickets, and an assortment of paper treasures that have been found along the way of their fictional journeys.

Literature

We will begin our new class novel, Letters from Rifka,by Karen Hesse next week. This is a story about a girl and her family who escape to America to gain their freedom. Along the way, Rifka faces many adventures and obstacles. She finds comfort in writing letters inside a book that her cousin gave her.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day Information

Naturalization Field Trip

We had a fantastic time at the downtown Federal Court on Wednesday. The girls were at their best, asking and answering questions like champs, and they got a huge and magical
surprise when Mrs. Kefu Dorian, our own Mandarin Chinese language teacher, was naturalized and became a United States citizen right before  our very eyes. Dr. Kapetanis was able to join us for this great moment. Of course, this was heartfelt and the Fourthies were so pleased to be a part of this experience. We even held an extended celebration the next morning and Mrs. Dorian received a red, white, and blue bouquet and the girls enjoyed red, white, and blue dessert popsicles to make it an even more momentous event.


Grandparents and Special Friends

The girls are preparing a brief song and dance review from Mary Poppins for Grandparents and Special Friends Day which will be on Thursday. We look forward to sharing time with Grandparents and Special Friends in the fourth grade classroom and are especially excited to have them come to lunch with us.


Language Arts

Students will be creating poetry to describe the Sheroes they have been studying. They will be attached below their Shero watercolors on the hallway wall outside of the classroom. 

The girls have enjoyed working on Wordly Wise creative projects like emoji and text writing which includes storytelling with lesson 15 Wordly Wise words. The girls have had a lot of fun with this and have gotten quite creative. We will take some time to share them in class. 


Mathematics

Students will continue to review the unit on decimals when we get back after Easter break. We will take an assessment the following Tuesday. 






Literature

In A Year Down Yonder, both my students and "Mary Alice" are beginning to see that Grandma is not just a "force to behold". They are opening their eyes to an old woman who is a hard worker and is willing to go out in the dark and snowy cold evenings to do some trapping to get some furs to trade for cash. With the money Grandma is

saving, she will be buying Mary Alice shoes and clothing that are much needed, since Mary Alice is a growing girl. Even Grandma can now look forward to a happy Christmas.


History 4 Fourthies

Students have enjoyed watching the British Broadcast story of "Carrie's War" and are Creating Scripts for an Episode 9 Production of their own, which they will record on an iPad.  The girls had a choice of working collaboratively on this or summarizing and illustrating three characters in the story for their culmination project on the 1940s.
